Is a Direct Sales or Multi-Level Marketing Business Right for You?
Avon, Amway, and Herbalife are just a few examples.
Tupperware, Mary Kay, and Natura are just a few examples.
You're familiar with the names.
Others of these direct sales businesses are ones you grew up with, and some are even ones your mother grew up with.
You most likely have some of these items in your own kitchen and bathroom, and if you don't, you know someone who does.
These are unquestionably businesses that exist and move about.
They are also very lucrative businesses.
In 2017, the six businesses mentioned above, which are six of the world's biggest direct sales companies, earned $27.3 billion.
(Amway ranked first on the 2018 DirectSellingNews Global 100 List, earning $8.60 billion on its own.)
Is that to say that becoming a direct salesperson for a firm like Amway or Avon is a suitable business for you to start?
Here's all you need to know about direct sales and MLM (Multilevel Marketing) to make an educated choice.
Direct sales has many advantages.
Direct sales, unlike many other companies, has no entrance restrictions.
There is no need for a certain degree of education or training.
It is not necessary to work full-time or even a certain amount of hours each week.
You can do it from the comfort of your own home.
It's a low-cost way to get started.
Typically, all you need to do to get started is buy a starting kit of goods; some businesses offer these to new sellers for as low as $35, but the majority in my preliminary poll ranged from $99 to $150.
Some businesses even provide a variety of starting packages for new reps.
Avon, for example, gives newcomers the option of a $25, $50, or $100 beginning package.
MLM and direct sales are not the same thing.
Direct sales is a business strategy in which independent contractors (or agents or distributors) sell a company's goods and/or services to customers directly.
They may do this via door-to-door sales, the internet, or hosting parties at their homes.
There is no set store location, but many direct sellers operate from home.

It, too, is a business model in which independent contractors offer a company's goods and/or services to customers directly.
The distinction is that under the MLM business model, independent contractors may also profit by recruiting people to work for the firm.
So, if you work for an MLM business, you earn money not only from your own sales, but also from the sales of your recruiters and recruits of your recruits - your downline.
(Hence the name "multilevel.")
Many direct sales firms, like the aforementioned Amway and Avon, are MLM companies.
If you're considering about working for a direct sales business, you can see the benefit; it's a whole new income stream that may significantly boost your revenue.
But…\sBeware!
Some multi-level marketing companies (MLMs) may be pyramid schemes.
That is precisely why some unscrupulous con artists have seized on the MLM business concept and turned it into pyramid scams.
MLM is completely lawful in both the United States and Canada.
Pyramid schemes, however, are not.
The primary legal distinction between MLMs and pyramid schemes is that MLM businesses earn money by selling goods and/or services, while pyramid schemes make money by taking advantage of you.
In other words, rather than selling products or services, the primary goal of a pyramid scheme is to persuade you to put your money in and encourage others to do the same.
If you are unsure if an MLM business you are considering is genuine or a pyramid scheme, ask these six questions.
And if the answers to any of the questions are suspicious, put your wallet back in your purse or pocket and go - this is a chance to go to prison, not to earn money.
You Have the Potential to Make a Lot of Money
Working for a genuine MLM or direct sales business, on the other hand, has the potential to pay off handsomely.
Nancy Collamer's book Second-Act Careers tells the story of Karen Pagliurolo, a former nurse and stay-at-home mom who now makes a fortune as a regional manager and sales consultant for the high-end direct sales fashion company Etcetera, hosting trunk shows four times a year in her basement in Winchester, Massachusetts.
What sort of fortune is it?
According to the nutrition supplement company's website, a Herbalife consultant on the president's team may make up to $480,000.
However, Herbalife's description of average remuneration indicates that this is only true for 0.3 percent of its salespeople.
Debbie Davis, an Avon billionaire, lives in the United Kingdom.
According to the Daily Mail, she and her boyfriend made £1.4 million in 2010, making them the make-up company's top earners in the UK for the fifth year in a row.
Many MLM firms also provide top seller incentives, such as Mary Kay's well-known pink Cadillacs.
However, you may not.
However, as Ms. Collamer herself states in her book Can You Really Make Money in Direct Sales?
According to Forbes, "the majority of individuals who go into direct sales aren't as successful."
In reality, the Direct Selling Association reports that the typical annual salary for direct sales consultants in 2011 was $2,400.
According to the business, 50 percent of Herbalife earners earned less than US$370 per year in 2017, while just 10 percent earned more than US$6,965 per year.
And, according to Herbalife, fewer than 15% of its distributors in the United States made any money from them.
To be honest, not everyone who works as a contractor or consultant for a direct sales firm is doing so to earn money.
Some consultants become consultants only to save money on products or services.

Even the most active vendors utilize what they sell on a regular basis.
How Much Work Are You Willing to Put Into Your Direct Sales or Multi-Level Marketing Business?

Or do you want direct sales to be your primary source of income?
Or anything in the middle?
One of the appeals of direct sales is that your success is entirely dependent on your own efforts.
You Must Enjoy Selling
Direct selling is not for the timid or retired.
You must be willing to put yourself out there.
No, not just out there as in the internet.
As in face-to-face, person-to-person, and door-to-door interactions.
According to the Direct Selling Association, this accounted for 72 percent of all direct sales in 2016.
Unless you have hundreds of friends, you must be the kind of person who is at ease talking with strangers.
And you must learn how to market to them, which entails much more than just knocking on someone's door and saying, "Hello."

(It's a good sign if you're not cringing right now.)
Sales abilities may be acquired if you are prepared to put in the effort.)
Direct sales may be a fantastic business option for you if you're prepared to put in the effort to aggressively offer goods or services to individuals other than your acquaintances.
The benefits of direct sales are difficult to overestimate, particularly for individuals who wish to work flexible hours.
If you're considering about starting an MLM company, keep in mind that developing a downline takes work, and it may take a long time to earn a decent living.
That is, if you are seeking for a company that will provide a livelihood for your family on its own, this is probably not it, at least not for the years it will take to "climb the ranks."
However, not all direct sales include MLM, and if you're searching for a company that will offer additional money and the pleasure of developing something, direct sales may be a wonderful option for you - particularly if you're looking for something that is fast and simple to get started with.
